Suzuki launches fully remodeled Wagon R in Japan
26-09-2008
Tokyo, Japan - Suzuki Motor Corp. launched a fully remodeled version of its flagship Wagon R minivehicle in Japan on Thursday.
The new 660-c.c car features a more spacious interior and offers greater comfort to passengers, Suzuki said. The Wagon R underwent its first full model changeover in five years.
The Wagon R has remained the best-selling minivehicle in Japan for five years running through fiscal 2007. With the revamping, Suzuki hopes to boost demand for the car further in order to widen the lead over rival Daihatsu Motor Co.'s <7262> Tanto and Move minivehicles.
Suzuki also revamped the Wagon R Stingray, which is designed mainly for young consumers.
The new Wagon R and Wagon R Stingray are priced at between 908,250 yen and 1,671,600 yen.
New auto sales in Japan continue slumping due to the country's slowing economy and soaring gasoline prices. Minivehicle sales in January-August dropped 3.2 pct from the corresponding period of last year.
Suzuki Chairman Osamu Suzuki said at a press conference Thursday that minivehicles sales in 2008 are expected to fall to about 1.85 million units from some 1.91 million units in 2007.
